Pietro’s Fight Raises Funds for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Research
Sunday, December 6, 2020
What Is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy?
DMD is a fatal genetic condition that most frequently affects male children. Approximately 300,000 boys around the world - and 20,000 in the Unites States - are affected by the disease, which causes the muscles to deteriorate. Children with DMD require a wheelchair by the age of 12.
In addition, males do not survive beyond their mid-20s. During the early stages, movement becomes difficult, and eventually the heart and respiratory muscles begin to fail. The condition has no cure. Recently, gene-based therapies have shown promise in the fight against DMD. Approaches include RNA-based technology, gene replacement, and drug-based solutions.

Jet.com’s Assure Safety Standards Exceed Federal Requirements
While all private jet owners follow a set of Federal Aviation Administration regulations known as FAR 91, Jets.com goes above and beyond to implement its own set of Assure Safety Standards. The company’s proprietary safety program outlines company rules related to drug and alcohol testing foo pilots, required pre-employment testing, and random and periodic testing once pilots are hired.
Assure Safety Standards also maintain runway length requirements that ensure aircraft can land within 80 percent of the runway length, and strictly regulate how long crew members can fly and how long they must rest between flights. Additionally, Jet.com’s safety standards require compliance with the Pilot Records Improvement Act, and prohibit aircraft from landing at airports without weather-reporting facilities.

Pietro’s Fight Holds Fourth Annual 5K Event
The organization recently held an event, called “Pietro’s Fight to the Finish Line,” which took place on September 24 and raised funds for the organization and DMD research. Dayna Scarso, who co-founded the charity after her son, Pietro, was diagnosed with the disease, noted that there was a large turnout for the event.
In addition, she highlighted that members of the nonprofit, as well as other event participants, were celebrating the news that Exondys 51 was approved for DMD patients by the Food and Drug Administration. Also known as Eteplirsen, it is the first drug to be approved to treat muscular dystrophy patients, a move that was welcomed by many organizations.
